L'Artisan Parfumeur

French perfume house, founded in 1976 by Jean Laporte.

Jean Laporte, a chemist, opened L'Artisan Parfumeur in Paris in 1976 with a then-radical idea: sell perfume under its own name rather than a couturier's, in small runs, to people who wanted something unusual.

Mûre et Musc, in 1978, was a commercial hit that proved the model worked. Timbuktu and Dzing!, both by Bertrand Duchaufour, are among the more admired oddities in modern perfumery. Dzing! smells deliberately of paper, sawdust and circus animals.
