Diptyque

French perfume house, founded in 1961 by Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant.

Diptyque opened in 1961 as a decorative shop selling fabrics and objects. Scented candles came next, and the first fragrance, L'Eau, arrived in 1968, based on a sixteenth-century pomander recipe.

The house style is literary and specific: a scent built around one remembered place or plant rather than a market segment. Philosykos is a fig tree in Greece. Tam Dao is sandalwood recalled from Vietnam.
