Frédéric Malle, whose grandfather founded Parfums Christian Dior, launched Editions de Parfums in 2000 on an editorial model: he commissions perfumers, gives them no cost ceiling and no marketing brief, and credits them by name on the label.
That single decision changed the industry's culture. Perfumers who had worked anonymously for decades, Dominique Ropion, Jean-Claude Ellena and Maurice Roucel among them, became publicly known. Portrait of a Lady and Musc Ravageur are the best-known results.
