Serge Lutens came from image-making, first Dior makeup and then Shiseido, before launching fragrance under his own name in 1992 at Les Salons du Palais Royal in Paris. Nearly all of the work is composed with Christopher Sheldrake.
The house made candied, resinous orientals fashionable again. Féminité du Bois built an entire style on cedar and plum; Ambre Sultan is a reference amber. Lutens writes his own copy, which is as idiosyncratic as the perfumes.
