Amouage was created in Muscat in 1983 at the instruction of the Omani royal family, with a brief to make fragrance at the highest attainable quality using Omani materials, above all silver frankincense from Dhofar.
The first fragrance, Gold, was composed by Guy Robert, who described the brief as the most generous he had ever received. The house sits where Arabian and European traditions meet: Western structure carrying Arabian raw-material density. Creative direction under Christopher Chong from 2007 pushed it toward narrative, conceptual work.
