Two Grasse-trained former L'Oréal executives opened Le Labo in New York's Nolita in 2006. Each bottle is mixed in the shop at the moment of purchase and labelled with the buyer's name and the date. The routine has barely changed since opening.
Santal 33 became one of the defining scents of the 2010s, ubiquitous enough to draw its own backlash. The house was acquired by Estée Lauder in 2014.
