Jo Malone began blending scents for facial-treatment clients in London and opened her first shop in 1994. The proposition was new to the mass market: bright single-idea colognes, sold with the explicit suggestion that you wear two at once.
The house was acquired by Estée Lauder in 1999. Its cream-and-black packaging and restrained citrus-and-flower vocabulary have been very widely imitated. Jo Malone herself later founded a separate house, Jo Loves.
