The couturier Jean Patou commissioned Henri Alméras to make Joy in 1930, at the depth of the Great Depression, as a gesture to American clients who could no longer afford couture. It used an extravagant quantity of Grasse jasmine and Bulgarian rose, and was marketed frankly on cost.
The fragrance arm has been absorbed and revived more than once, but the archive (Joy, 1000, Sublime) is regarded as one of the strongest in classical French perfumery.
