Houbigant opened in Paris in 1775, selling gloves, powders and scented sachets to an aristocratic clientele. It is among the oldest names still recognised in perfumery.
Its place in history rests on Fougère Royale, released in 1882 and built around synthetic coumarin. The composition was distinct enough that perfumers named a whole family after it. The fougère became the backbone of men's fragrance for the century that followed. Quelques Fleurs, in 1912, did something comparable for the floral bouquet.
