Ben Gorham, a former basketball player with no perfumery training, founded Byredo in Stockholm in 2006 and worked from the start with the perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jérôme Epinette.
The house's contribution was as much visual as olfactory: stripped packaging, plain typography and a gallery-like retail environment that much of the industry subsequently copied. Gypsy Water and Bal d'Afrique remain its signatures. Byredo was acquired by Puig in 2022.
