Victor Wong founded Zoologist in Toronto in 2013 on a constraint that sounds like a gimmick and is not: every release interprets a single animal, and independent perfumers are commissioned and credited for each.
The results are unusually adventurous. Hyrax leans into animalic hyraceum, Bat opens on damp earth and overripe fruit. The house is a good illustration of how far an independent can go when it does not have to please a retail buyer.
